In an effort to educate the Hispanic employees at my current job, I failed miserably at explaining the significance of Labor Day. First, my Spanglish is horrid. (Even I don't know what I'm talking about.) Second, is a "day off work to hit the nearest body of water one last time, and get wasted with your friends," a fair explanation for them? NO.
Me: Well..originally..in the beginning..it was a day for umm...people to be recognized..(insert "do you follow me" hand gesture.)
Marta: Yes. Si.
Me: okay. for people who work..to be honored for their..umm...contributiones (WTF was that?)..hmm...contributions to society. So..just a day off for people who work. (Que in a completely puzzled look from yours truly.)
Marta: Oh, ok.
Me: Yep, so that's it.
Marta: So do me work Lunes. Munday?
Me: Yep.
Marta: Si. Gracias.
That's right. You work and I'll take a day off. Gracias. (There is something SO wrong about that entire situation.)
